The coverage of the PECL was already quite wide. They had rules not only on the formation, validity, interpretation and contents of contracts and, by analogy, other juridical acts, but also on the performance of obligations resulting from them and on the remedies for non-performance of such obligations. Indeed the later Chapters had many rules applying to private law rights and obligations in general — for example, rules on a plurality of parties, on the assignment of rights to performance, on set-off and on prescription. To this extent the Principles went well beyond the law on contracts as such. The DCFR continues this coverage but it goes further.
